What Is A Halti?
The Halti is a recently modern addition to the standard pieces of canine kit available such as the collar, lead and harness. While it can be very useful for certain dogs and provides several advantages over restraint methods, is it also very widely misunderstood!
The chances are that if you are not sure what a Halti is, you have more than likely spotted a dog out walking wearing one. Perhaps you mistook it foe a muzzle? Or simply not realised it is or how it works?
Let's take a quick look in more detail at the function and use of a Halti, and the pros and cons of using one on your own dogs
What Does The Halti Do?
Be In Control
The Halti provides an enhanced level of control over your dog's head, which can make walks a lot more pleasant, if your dog is a lead puller, lunger or barker.
It's Kinder
It provides a much kinder alternative to choke chains or other stupidly vile equipment. It doesn't place undue pressure on the neck and it doesn't hurt them.
Comfortable
Due to it's fabric design, the Halti is comfy for dogs on what is a sensitive area of their body. With efficient training, you can easily help your dog to adapt to this new thing on their snout.
Air Control
The Halti allows your dog to breath and move their mouth, unlike the fabric muzzles that virtually tape them shut. It won't stop them barking or snapping, we'll come on to this very shortly.
The Cons To The Halti
What The F@@k?
Wearing a Halti can take some getting used to from your dog. It's applying an additional feeling of restriction, and dog's don't naturally like being in the restricted section! Some dog's freezing or thrashing about to get it off
Magical Illusions
Whilst you may gain temporary control of your dog, inside it could potentially be causing them a lot of distress. Not good. That's why when fitting the Halti, it HAS to be done properly.
Will It Fix The Barking?
In keeping with the Magical Illusions, no it bloody doesn't. This shouldn't be viewed as an excuse to substitute your dog's training. This is a temporary measure to just give you a little more control of them.
Can They Get Out Of It?
Yeah, if it's not the right size! Too large and they'll whip it right off with their paws. Too small and you run the risk of injuring them. We don't want any rubbing against their nose or restrictions to breathing. So make sure you get the right size.
What You'll Learn
Whether you're new to the Halti or having difficulties with your dog and theirs, my FREE step by step training video has been designed to help you to get a dog who WANTS to wear the Halti.
Imagine that! A dog who chooses to have it put on.
Step One: Introducing the Halti and how to pair it as a pleasant thing to see
Step Two: Teach the tunnel. You've seen a train flying in one side of a tunnel and out of the other, right? Well, consider how cool it'll be when you see your dog's nose pop out the other side of the Halti awaiting for it to be fitted.
Step Three: Maintain Halti nose placement and teach your nose this dangly thing hanging off their face is A Okay.
Step Four (Secret Step!) Enjoy your walks again, both of you. There is nothing worse than seeing a dog in distress, trying to get it off their nose. Those pavements can scuff their pretty faces, and those claws can soon cause a slice. On either you or them!
